In 2017, USEPA Region 9 selected the Tuluwat Village site for its Excellence in Site Reuse Award. USEPA created the Excellence in Site Reuse award program to highlight the best examples of cleanup work that supports communities and returns land to important use with the goal of recognizing those who have been instrumental in partnering with USEPA to foster cleanup and reuse. The award - a first for Region 9 - was the first USEPA reuse award in the country to be given to a tribe.
The following story highlights the cultural and historical background of the island while highlighting the collaborative cleanup efforts for Tuluwat. Many thanks to USEPA Region 9 staff, Alison Frost from Skeo for the wonderful story, all the Tribe's partners, and the countless volunteers that made this project a success. Hu'
